Cape Pillar

Polygonal columns of dolerite form the eastern face of Cape Pillar in the Tasman National Park, close to the most southeasterly part of Tasmania.

The columns formed from the cooling of basaltic magma that was injected as thick subsurface sheets about 170 million years ago. Erosional processes since that time have resulted in the landforms revealed today.

  • Cape Pillar is printed on canvas, stretched over a wooden frame

  • Large prints: canvas dimensions 101 cm x 76 cm

  • Limited edition prints (25 in total) are individually signed and numbered by the artist

Monument

Prominent dolerite columns face the sea along much of the coastline of the Tasman National Park.

On the easter side, coastal weathering processes have separated a group of several columns from the land into the spectacular sea stack known as the Monument.

  • Monument printed on canvas, stretched over a wooden frame

  • Large prints: canvas dimensions 102 cm x 76 cm

  • Limited edition prints (25 in total) are individually signed and numbered by the artist

Sawn Rocks

Sawn Rocks is a part of the now extinct Nandewar Volcano that dominated the landscape of the region east of Narrabri in northern NSW about 17 to 21 million years ago.

The cliff face visible at Sawn Rocks is about 40 metres high and reveals the remainder of a trachyte flow that formed striking columns during cooling. Erosion since the volcano became extinct has revealed the striking cliff face seen today.

Shrinkage cracks (joints) that formed as the trachyte cooled created the hexagonal pattern seen in column cross sections. Some of these are well revealed in the cliff face as parts of some columns have fallen under gravity.
